He has flaunted his ill-gotten wealth, believing that the keys to the company, ZANU-PF, and the nation itself, were simply a matter of price. But a series of stunning and decisive events suggests that the “day of reckoning”—long prophesied by principled voices—is finally at hand. The veteran supervisors of the bus company have stood up, the rule book has been thrown in his face, and Mamvura has been left exposed on the roadside, a charlatan in a party that has finally decided to disown its own monstrous creation.

The unravelling began with a moment of breathtaking humiliation. After a brazen attempt to buy his way into the ZANU-PF Central Committee through the back door of the Harare Province, Kudakwashe Tagwirei was physically ejected from the high-level meeting by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga. This was not a polite request to leave; it was a firm, principled removal of a trespasser from the cockpit of the party.

This decisive act of leadership was then swiftly endorsed and institutionalized by the party’s Chairman, Obert Mpofu. His office issued the now-famous circular dated 05 June 2025, a document that served as a constitutional firewall. By reaffirming the party’s sacred rule that any member aspiring to the Central Committee must have served the people for at least five years in a senior provincial position, the Chairman’s circular confirmed for all to see that Tagwirei was utterly and completely ineligible.

Humiliated but undeterred, Mamvura embarked on a desperate tour to create the illusion of authority. It was like watching a rich but disgraced villager announce two big feasts, hoping the presence of the Chief and Headman would restore his lost dignity. First, he beat his drum in Harare, organizing an event for spiritual leaders at the ZANU-PF headquarters and advertising that the Company Manager himself, President Mnangagwa, would be the guest of honour. But it seems he forgot the first rule of a village feast: you must actually invite the Chief. The day came, the food was prepared, but the President’s chair remained embarrassingly empty. He simply boycotted the event, leaving Mamvura looking like a man who had slaughtered a beast for a guest who was never coming.

Thinking the problem was merely the location, he then took his drum to an event for business leaders in Bulawayo. This time, he promised that the veteran supervisor, Vice President Chiwenga, would attend. The response was even sharper. The Vice President’s office sent a messenger with a public notice for all to hear, distancing itself from the “sham event.” It was the equivalent of the Headman telling the entire village, “We do not dance to that man’s drum, and his beer is not our beer.” Mamvura was left alone again, with a hall full of his own echoes and a nation full of knowing whispers.

Even the Company Manager, President Mnangagwa, who has for so long seemed paralyzed by Mamvura’s influence, appears to be reading the shift in the political winds. At a subsequent event, he was heard chanting the now-famous slogan, “pasi nezvigananda” (down with the tenderpreneurs). It was the chant of a manager finally bowing to the immense pressure from his principled supervisors.

The final, devastating blow came from Ambassador Mutsvangwa, who, as analyzed in a viral post by Jealousy Mawarire, lifted the final veil on the source of Mamvura’s power. In a scornful press briefing, Mutsvangwa declared that Zimbabweans must stop “picking heroes from the streets.” He confirmed what we have always suspected: ZANU-PF made Tagwirei. His fortune, he implied, was not the product of business genius but of his role as a “middleman created by ZANU-PF to ‘cream off the economy'”. The party, in essence, reminded its creation that they are the true owners of the money he is flaunting.

Mamvura’s backers within the party—those provincial leaders who eagerly accepted cars in exchange for their loyalty—are now exposed as foolish depot foremen who traded the company’s integrity for a shiny new vehicle, only to see their benefactor disowned by head office.

So, is this the end of the road for Mamvura? One would hope. The party has, for now, successfully blocked him from driving. The highest echelons of power have publicly rebuked and humiliated him. Yet, we must remember the nature of this particular Mamvura. He is a man who, having been allowed to siphon the company’s fuel for years, now believes he owns the entire fleet. A desperate Mamvura, with billions at his disposal and all legitimate paths closed, is arguably more dangerous than ever. His nature is not to rest until he has either seized the wheel or, in a final act of spite, crashed the bus completely. The party may have stopped him from driving for now, but he is still a wealthy, malevolent passenger on a bus he is determined to control. The journey is far from over.

For months, we have watched with a mix of horror and morbid fascination as the unqualified driver, Mamvura, has tried to bribe, bully, and bluff his way into the driver’s seat of our national bus.
